On
last week, my teacher was telling me about what is English. English is a
language that reflects you, and my teacher could make decision if student can
graduate or not by knowing how they used their language. He explained to us
about teacher-student position. Teacher’s job to facilitated or monitored
student and student must be active and become the center of attention.
My
teacher also told that to learn English, you must have at least five aspects.
First is will, without will, someone can’t master something. We must have a
good will if we want learn. Second is knowledge, after having a good will, we
need knowledge. Third is attitude, this is important because knowledge without
attitude will be useless or harm the others, for example someone have good knowledge
but it is used for cheating other people. Fourth is skill, this is the object
that we must achieve because with skill we can do something easier. The last is
experience, after we master the four aspect, we will get experience. We can do
something because we have done it in previous time.
I
also got some advice that as student I need to work harder to master English.
Because based on my mark on vocabulary quiz, I didn’t pass the standard mark.
My teacher said that English is you; it means that English reflect yourself.
English isn’t a language that can be mastered in short time. Everything need a
process to master it.
Last week, in Monday February 21st 2013, my
teacher taught English. Usually we had some quiz at the beginning class. We
must translate what the teacher said into English language. After that, we got
the score from the quiz. I got my mark 42. My teacher always tells us about
traditional teaching method and innovative teaching method. Most of teacher in
Indonesia are using the traditional teaching method. However in International,
teachers are using the innovative teaching method. Teacher’s job is
facilitating or monitoring student and student must be active and become the
center of attention because English is you, Will is you, Knowledge is you,
Attitude is you, Skill is you, and Experience is you.
Then teacher continue teach us about Problem Mathematics
Teaching. There are two form of mathematics by Ebutt and Straker. That is
formal mathematics and school mathematics. Formal mathematics is mathematics
for university level, it study about axiomatic, theorem, and pure mathematics.
School mathematics is mathematics that study about searching of pattern and
relationship, problem solving activity, investigation activity, and the means
of communication. The school mathematics is match for student below university
level.
For example, in formal mathematics, we know that 5 x 6 is
30. But that is formal mathematics, if the student is still elementary school
second years, of course the student will be confused. But in school
mathematics, naturally show that there was 30 apples which arranged by 5 rows
and 6 column and teacher show that is the means of 5 x 6, and the result is 30.
That will be easier to understand than formal mathematics.
My teacher said that in fact, teacher is usually used the
formal mathematics for student of elementary, junior high school, or senior
high school. That will be a burden for student which can make student stress
and loss their feeling toward mathematics. We should apply the school math for
elementary, junior, or high school. So, we must know when we apply the formal
mathematics or school mathematics.
My teacher told us about iceberg of mathematic, or in
Indonesia we can call volcano of mathematics. Teacher draws a triangle which
resembles a volcano.

From the picture, we know that there are many level of
mathematics. Start from bottom, there are concrete mathematics, model concrete,
model formal, and formal math. That shows us about student position in study
mathematics. As teacher, we must know where student’s position, because if we
teach in wrong position then the result won’t be optimum. In the end of lesson,
my teacher says that all of us need to work harder to master English. We can
open the internet to broad our knowledge, read the book, watch film, and listen
to the music which related to English. So, not only from teacher we get
knowledge but also from all.
